Mêlée Island was one of the main islands of the Tri-Island Area and served as the main home of its Governors.

Overview[]

Mêlée Island was a popular place for the pirates of the Caribbean, and many settled there while LeChuck terrorized the seas. Many homes were near the dock and main street, while more were dotted around the island including tourism spots.

Notable businesses include:

Interestingly, Mêlée Island also contains an elevator that leads to a series of underwater tunnels that connect to several other islands, specifically Monkey Island and Dinky Island. While it is unknown what the purpose of these tunnels was originally, they eventually fell under the control of LeChuck after establishing Monkey Island as one of his bases throughout the Caribbean. LeChuck may have used the tunnels, among other purposes, to get from Monkey Island to Mêlée Island when he was disguised as Fester Shinetop, explaining how he managed to go between the two islands several times without his ship in an extremely short amount of time.

It seemed to always be 10pm on the island.

Changes in EfMI[]

The island's geography also changes somewhat between the two games. Most notably the harbour (previously owned by Stan) is moved from the inner bay to the southeast coast. The location of the Governor's Mansion seems to have also been altered, though this can be debated as the mansion was depicted as being a good distance away from Mêlée Town in the first game as well, reachable through a cliff-side road. Other notable changes have happened to Mêlée Town itself, with The International House of Mojo being much more prominent and with the Scumm Bar now located closer to the rest of town, as well as its exit now facing towards the town centre and not away from the sea as in the first game.

Changes in RtMI[]

Although the locations to Meathook's Island, the Circus and Sword training house were gone, when Guybrush goes to these locations, Guybrush reminisces about the former places.

Melee Island town is almost similar to the one in the original. However, most of the buildings have been boarded up. In the High Town portion of the town, Wally's store, Maps-n-More is one of the only store not closing down. In Low Town, the Church has been boarded up, but the jail is still used. Despite the General Store being closed down, it appears to be the residence of the elderly Widey Bones. Another new shop is the Locksmith. Nothing much has changed to the governor's mansion except that Carla, the new Governor has taken up residence.

Trivia[]

Meleesunset
  • Only in the PC EGA version of SoMI, at the very start of the game, when Guybrush walks at the dock, the scenery shows a sunset. The sunset is replaced by the starry night sky soon after and remains so for the rest of the game. The sunset code has been removed to all other versions of SoMI (perhaps because it would be difficult to translate the coloring code to VGA and other palettes) and it is already deep night from the beginning of the story.[1]
    • The said sunset would be inconsistent with the concept that the time is always 22:00 on that island; it is also the only instance in the games when the progress of time is shown.
  • It is first seen in The Secret of Monkey Island, is cameoed in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and returned in Escape from Monkey Island.
  • If Guybrush Threepwood exits the lift in the tunnels under Dinky Island at the top, he will emerge in the back alley behind the Church.
  • The island has a lot in common with the real world popular pirate island of Tortuga.
