The Tunnels Under Dinky Island were some installations beneath the island. Somehow they seemed to be connected to Mêlée Island and possibly to the Carnival of the Damned (Monkey Island).

One entry to the Tunnels is through an alley of Mêlée town; a door with the sign "Employees Only" leads to an elevator going down the Tunnels. Coincidentally or not, there is a circus advertisment poster beside that door.

An enigmatic location of unknown purpose and history, as if it anachronistically belonged to a much later time and place than the Caribbean of the Pirate era; for example it was lit by electric light bulbs. It looked like it was used for storage of crates and several entertainment stuff that belonged to a circus or fun park, such as balloons and kewpie dolls. There is also a Grog Machine. There is a First Aid room; a pair of abandoned skeletons waiting there, which Guybrush recognised as his parents.

Guybrush Threepwood found them after digging for the treasure of Big Whoop beneath the jungle of Dinky Island. There LeChuck waited for him and, after revealing that he is his brother, he tortured him with voodoo magic; however instead of teleporting Guybrush to a place of suffering, he managed only to teleport him around the tunnels.

Evading LeChuck, Guybrush managed to collect items that made a voodoo doll to fight him back. When LeChuck was defeated, Guybrush realised that LeChuck was his brother Chuckie. Right then, a mysterious employee came, and led them, through an unseen exit, outside where their parents waited for them; the place seemed to be part of the "Big Whoop Amusement Park" (which curiously looked like Ville de la Booty).

Trivia[]

  • Even though the Monkey Island games are full of comical anachronisms and modern elements, the Dinky Island Tunnels seem way out of place in the context of the game; it is possible that they are a gateway to another world (as the Voodoo Lady seemed to suggest) opened by the E Ticket, or an illusion (caused by LeChuck according to the retconned backstory of CMI). However look below.
  • The tunnel beneath the Phatt Island waterfall that leads to Rum Rogers' Cottage, has similar style as the Dinky Island Tunnels, metallic with electric lights. This seems to suggest that their mysterious builders made other tunnels and passages beneath the Tri-Island Area, and they are not an illusion. The mysterious out-of-place pump that triggers the waterfall might have something to do with it.
    • The modern-looking tunnels beneath Dinky and Phatt, and the waterfall-pump seem to suggest that the main game is some sort of theme park diorama or ride. Ron Gilbert had confirmed in an interview this was indeed the Secret of Monkey Island; that Guybrush was in fact in a pirate-themed amusement park.[1]
  • The employee who finds the "kids" and lead them back outside is very similar to Rich and the other truck driver of Universal Pirate Shipping. The "exit" through which they return to the Park is not seen in-game, as the tunnels seem to be totally enclosed.
  • According to a map in the MI2 Hint Book, there is a hidden room full of "Vast amounts of unobtainable wealth" right behind the room where Guybrush lands, although there is no entry to it, and so it never appears in the game. It is possible that this treasure is the real Big Whoop.
