The Crossroads was the afterlife acted as an afterlife, especially for pirates. It was said that Nor Treblig was the guardian of the crossroads. When someone eneters the crossroads, the deceased would have to pay the ferryman the two coins that were given to him on death, where the ferry would then take to the nexus. It is there that the deceased has to decided which area would suit itself: Swordfighting, Buried Treasure hunting and Thieves Den. Each of those areas caters to those with the area's namesake (for instance, those in the treasure hunting would be greeted with an area with lots of X's and lots of treasures to go with it.)
It was alluded to by the Voodoo Lady to Guybrush in the first chapter of Tales of Monkey Island. Guybrush would later end up in the Crossroads when LeChuck fatally impaled him.
